The custom-made photovoltaic system supplies, among other things, processing machines, lighting systems, IT infrastructure and test facilities with renewable solar energy. It is planned that up to 90 percent of the total energy generated will be used at the site itself and that excess energy will be fed into the grid. The new solar power system extends over 1,550 m2 and is capable of generating 300,000 kWh of renewable electricity per year, which corresponds to a peak output of 302.94 kilowatts. The company expects to save up to 176 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

Sulzer will operate the photovoltaic system itself and thus benefit directly from the green electricity generated in-house. The solar cells are leased from Stadtwerke Bruchsal, which is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the system. Sulzer had already modernized its heating system five years ago, also in cooperation with the municipal utility. At that time, they converted to energy-saving gas condensing boiler technology in order to optimize the energy efficiency of the location. Both projects are part of an ongoing strategy to make the Bruchsal site and the company itself more sustainable in the long term.

Joachim Prestel, Head of Maintenance for Sulzer in Bruchsal, explains: "By switching to renewable energies, we want to help keep our ecological footprint as small as possible. The photovoltaic system helps us to cover our energy needs and at the same time permanently reduce our CO2 balance. We are constantly working to further improve our sustainability and the new solar cells are another step towards a greener future for us".
