Hello,
I would like to get feedback from you about my thoughts. We need a new family car. Since my current car is a Passat, I somehow have the feeling that I have selective perception and I tend to rate the Passats better than the other cars.
In this respect, I would be very interested in your neutral opinion on my thoughts. If I wrote too much text, you can also jump to the cars I looked at below.
Our current car:
-Passat Variant B7 / first registration 02/2013 with approx. 195000km mileage
-with ACC / distance cruise control - one of my "favorite features"
-miss the "Androidauto" feature in the current car, I'm very happy with the rest.
-Diesel (Euro5) with 140hp
Main motivation for car change:
-living in a southern German city where diesel Euro5 will be definitively banned from July 2022: https://www.stuttgart.de/.../dieselverkehrsverbot.php
-Current HU runs until 05/2023 and nothing is broken at the moment --> apart from the chip crisis and high prices for used cars, it's actually a good time for the change.
In my opinion, the chip crisis will not be overcome so quickly and because of inflation in the euro area, in my opinion, the prices for cars will not fall again but will remain at the current level, perhaps even increase further.
New car requirements
- Budget: 12,000-18,000 euros
-Family Carriage
-Driving profile: 20,000km per year / motorway (driving to parents/grandparents ~5000km + various vacations ~7000km) and country roads with switchbacks in central mountains (weekend trips ~2000km) and city trips max 6000km probably less
-Legroom in the back is important for my wife, since she will be driving in the back with my little son for the next 3-4 years + possibly more offspring
-Lots of space in the trunk (large sled, scooter, suitcase, skis) --> trunk in the Passat is ideal / a little smaller would be OK, but please not much smaller
-Android Auto (for navigation via Google --> traffic jam display/detour from Google is worth "gold" in my opinion + music selection on the large screen.
-ACC/distance cruise control: would be nice again, because of the high gain in comfort at construction sites / 120km/h restrictions / convoy traffic - an extra charge would be worth around 1000 euros to me (but not an extra charge of 5000 euros).
-The car should be able to drive "comfortably" 160km/h --> for me the optimal speed on German autobahns. Tires me less than 120...
-Seat heating (is now standard? - or do you have to pay extra attention to it?)
-If diesel: at least Euro 6d-temp, due to the general conditions at our place of residence - see above.
-If petrol: if possible Euro 6, but not so important in this case, because I don't believe in a driving ban for petrol in the next 10 years
-no new cars on principle (motivation: 1. less depreciation 2. would like to understand the history of the car in the database before buying it from the dealer / in particular which repairs have been made --> avoidance of "Monday car")
-would rather buy from an authorized dealer (motivation: 1. higher probability that the car is in order. 2. easier processing of repairs within the first year of the used car guarantee 3. insight into vehicle history via database (see point above)
---> I am aware that buying from an authorized dealer is more expensive, but the supposed(?) security would be worth it to me.
-Car should work, don't want to tinker with it myself. I would have the first inspection after purchase done in a contract workshop, then probably at ATU to save. I'm satisfied with the branch here on site - unlike what you can read in various forums, strange things have never happened to me here - I've been a customer here for years. Unfortunately, I don't know of any free workshops that I can trust locally.
For more complex repairs, e.g. on electronics or similar, of course I have to go to an authorized workshop, I am aware of that.
My current filter at mobile.de for the vehicle search
Location: Stuttgart - 100km radius
First registration: 2016
Kilometers up to 125000km
Vendor: Dealer
Now my thoughts which cars could come into question
-again Passat
link
This car fulfills almost(?) all my wishes for 17.700 Euro (has ACC, Euro 6d-temp but no mention of Android Auto, red color not ideal)
Only has 120hp, my current one has 140hp, wonder if you can tell the difference.
Or this:
link
This car has everything I need for 17,000 euros - I just don't know if the dealer is trustworthy. Definitely not a VW dealer. Does such a dealer normally have access to the database where you can read the history of a car?
The question would also be: does the Passat drive just as well as a petrol engine with 150 hp as a diesel?
Summary: if you are looking for something, you can certainly find a Passat with my requirements up to 18,000 euros.
The question for me is, can you find a similar "much" car for less money? I wouldn't use the ACC if I could find a car for 12,000 euros, for example, which covers my other requirements.
What strikes me: when I search on Mobile.de, I always find a Passat - do I have a selective perception here, or is it simply that the Passat best suits my requirements?
We have already looked at the following other cars
(That was a year ago, so obviously the links given aren't exactly the cars we were looking at back then)
-Skoda Octavia
-> Place OK
link
15,000 euros, without ACC - but about 3,000 euros cheaper
--> trustworthy dealer?
link
17,000 euros, without ACC
--> 17,000 euros. Observation: for a comparatively similar price I can get a car with ACC (see Passat above).
link
--> I would like one like that. But it also costs 19,000 euros.
Ford Focus '11 / Opel Astra K
-> not enough legroom in the back -> discarded these cars
Ford Focus '18
-> Place OK
-> Prices start at 17-18,000 euros. Without Android Auto and without ACC
Opel Insignia
-> Space on the back seat OK / trunk seemed a bit too tight to us. Selective perception or is that really the case?
->Price comparable to Passat. A tad cheaper without ACC, with ACC significantly more expensive than the Passat. For your age with less km than Passat (all renter vehicles?)
-> if I can't save a lot with the Insigna (>4000-5000 euros, why take such a car?)
Skoda Superb
positive: lots of space on the back seat and in the trunk
--> too expensive, offers according to my other requirements only from 20,000 euros --> unfortunately outside of the budget. Such a car would certainly be a lot of fun.
Ford Mondeo
positive: lots of space on the back seat and in the trunk
--> Currently mostly diesel on offer. The first car that meets the necessary Euro6d temp standard already costs 19,000 euros, but has no Android Auto and no ACC. For the same price I get more with the Passat.
--> not in the budget. If I could find one with ACC and Android Auto for that price, I'd consider it.
--> no petrol engines found in my budget.
We haven't looked at the following cars yet
-> The question I ask myself: Which of the cars make it worth taking a closer look at?
Which of the cars in the car/back seat/trunk space is sufficient for my needs above and is it worth looking at?
Toyota Avensis
-significantly more expensive than the current Passat. The prices start at 17,000 euros and even the cars for 20,000 euros have no ACC / Android Auto.
-It is striking that far fewer of these vehicles are offered at all.
Fiat Tipo station wagon
-according to this forum only makes sense as a new car, see this thread: https://www.motor-talk.de/.../...r-tipo-real-gut-t5737696.html?...
-After 5 years, many problems are expected and difficulties in repairing are expected.
link
At 13,400 euros, around 4,000 euros cheaper than the vehicles mentioned above. But the experiences you describe scare me. It seems that the Fiat Tipo is not a vehicle that you drive 200,000km and 10 years.
Toyota Corolla station wagon
-Prices start at 18,000-19,000 euros --> more faithful than the Passat.
- Noticeable: relatively many 3-year-old cars with less than 40,000 km --> these were hardly driven. That strikes me as a bit suspect. Or do I have selective perception here?
Mazda6
more expensive than the Passats
but I could still like one of these
link
18,500 euros. Packed with assistance systems, but without ACC / distance cruise control. I can't understand how to configure something like this. For me, the ACC would be by far the most important assistance system.
Hyundai i40
-positive: 93,000km and EZ 2016 from 12,000 euros (but with a rather old-fashioned display/radio - no Android Auto and certainly no ACC).
link
- due to the price it still seems attractive. The only question is whether you have to worry about repairs and quality at Hyundai.
-First cars with Android Auto AND the necessary Euro standard, from 17,000 euros. But at that price I almost get a Passat. I could like one of those, but it's just as expensive as a Passat (but with more power without ACC)
link
-also positive: compared to Toyota, larger selection of Hyundai i40 vehicles overall
Kia Optima
-Prices start at around 18,000 euros
-no ACC / distance cruise control in my budget
-not clear whether Android Auto is available --> so probably not?
- rather low km in relation to age (similar observation as with Corolla station wagon)
-Diesel only available as Euro6 --> does not fit.
Kia Ceed station wagon
-Offers from 17000 euros
-With Android Auto but without ACC.
