We all like soccer. So let's travel to the World Cup in our minds. Every country sends its best players to the starting line and everyone wants to show why they actually make so much money. Then he comes: A handball player! He scores 15 goals, is the best player of the tournament, even though he doesn't actually play football. Sounds unrealistic, right? This is exactly what is currently happening in German rap:

KUMMER, actually the singer of an indie rock band, has just dropped one of the best German rap albums of the year so far. I'm not a fan of Kraftklub at all, but I still had to admit with a heavy heart back in August that "Not the music" just turned out to be a good song with a brilliant video. Finally, the motivation-coaching-bubble was skilfully poked fun at in a song. What I initially thought was a lucky punch turned out to be a probably very good album with every further song. Today the whole thing is out and apart from a few songs that just don't really pick me up personally, I can't avoid naming KIOX as a candidate for album of the year.

The KUMMER recipe isn't all that cerebral, it simply addresses the issues that are currently affecting society and, above all, many rap fans: 9010 is Kummer's reference to his home town of Chemnitz, growing up in Karl-Marx-Stadt and the growth of right-wing violence. On "The Rest of My Life" the 30-year-old describes growing up and the bourgeois life that threatens with it. But in addition to political content and socially critical tracks, German rap and the lifestyle that goes with it is also clearly being fired at. In addition to "Not the Music", where he also fires off small swipes against Kollegah and his business practices, he released another single in advance with "How much is your outfit worth", which thematically reflects today's lifestyle of young people, but also of many rappers perfectly. Of course, he also alludes to the YouTube videos whose sole aim is to determine the value of an outfit. In front of the luxury boutiques, the participants - some rappers, children or Kai Pflaume (yes really) - brag about their clothes and the higher the value, the cooler you are. In his songs, Kummer rarely gets lost in metaphors and addresses topics a rare clarity. He never loses touch with the music and manages to combine lyrically demanding texts and skilfully set beats, flows and melodies.

But why does a Kummer, who has hardly had any contact with the German rap scene, have to be the first to address such topics? Does nobody else dare? Why doesn't anyone else just manage to mention that these coaching business practices are just rip-offs, right-wing violence continues to threaten the country and that Deichmann clothes coolness can also perform?

Yes, it's only October, but what's next? If we look at the release calendar, there are still OG Keemo's "Geist" among the eagerly awaited albums, possibly arrest warrant with "DWA" - but after that the air is already thin. This year was one of the stronger German rap years: We had Döll, we had Tua, we had SSIO and for the younger generation, whose taste in music I don't understand at all, there was also a lot with Capital Bra, Samra and the "-eros". Nevertheless, the singer from Kraftklub is coming, releasing his first rap songs and mixing up the whole scene with such ease as if it were nothing. Could you see it as an incentive for the last quarter of 2019 to do something better.
