He is the first actor in a wheelchair to play a doctor on German television."I am very happy and proud that I can play this role - also as a kind of pioneer," says Caglar in an interview with the news agency Spot on News and talks about the challenges that his disability brings with it.
Your curriculum vitae is packed with numerous stations - do you still sleep at some point? How do you get it all under one hat?
Tan Caglar: (laughs) If the day had a few more hours, I would be very agreed. But the nice thing is that everything I do is nourished each other. When I play basketball, my head is happy to work more afterwards and write texts again. The other way around, it is the same.I am very happy that nothing stands in the way.
After they were finally dependent on the wheelchair at the mid -20s due to a spinal cord disease, they suffered from depression for two years. How did you fight for yourself?
Caglar: In addition to the family that helped me a lot, it was above all the sport that got me out of this difficult phase.I have seven years as a professional in 1.Bundesliga Rollstuhlbasketball played. For me that was the return to normal life.
How do you manage your everyday life today: What can you do alone, where do you need support?
Caglar: I can do everything that I did before, you just have to do it differently.Fortunately, I don't fail because of something essential. What actually annoys me a bit is the refueling of my car.I am always happy when someone is there and that takes care of it for me.But that has more to do with laziness when I'm honest.
Do you find it difficult to ask for help?
Caglar: In the past - today it is the epitome of independence for me.Because if I could not ask for help, I would not get ahead in many areas.Independence also means acceptance of help to achieve his goals.
Many people are afraid to do something wrong when they meet a person with disabilities. What can you give this way?
Caglar: I can only recommend behaving as normal.Especially in the language. You don't make a mistake when you say to a wheelchair user: "Go over there".Or: "Come on, we're going there".This is organic and what we want to hear.normality.Or do you think: "Roll over there" better?
Knocking point inclusion: How and where is still urgently needed in politics and society?
Caglar: A lot can still be made in the infrastructure. Also in art and culture.More opportunities to attend public events. It is very hard that you cannot participate in something just because there is no accessibility or at least created on site.
You are the first actor in a wheelchair to play a doctor on German television. What kind of a feeling is this?
Caglar: An overdue!I am very happy and proud that I can play this role - also as a kind of pioneer. It is nice to know that the production of "in all friendship" goes this way and thus represents a small revolution on German TV.It is 2021 - it is also time!
What went through your head when you got the contract for the role?
Caglar: I was very happy on the one hand - on the other hand, I rattled questions through my head directly: whether I will probably make the medical technical terms without errors! How to operate exactly from my wheelchair. But of course especially how my colleagues take me in.And I have to say: It wasn't a problem! It's like other life: there is a solution for everything. In addition, the crew and the actresses and actors from day one received me immediately with open arms.I could hardly have hit it better.
What can fans expect from you in the new "in all friendship" consequences?
Caglar: Dr.Demir is a very researcher doctor who cannot be said about authorities. He plays with the uncertainties of his environment, but brings his patients all the more empathy. But above all, humor is one of his strengths, with which he brings a certain looseness into the Sachsenklinik.
From the fourth quarter of 2021 you will also be seen in a special role in the Berlin "crime scene".Can you tell us something about this?
Caglar: I can play at the side of the Commissioners, played by Meret Becker and Mark Waschke, their assistant named Malik Aslan in the homicide commission.Malik is also a very relaxed and ironic type - he has that with Dr.Ilay Demir together.Incidentally, I am very happy that as a police officer I can play another, rather atypical role for someone in a wheelchair. But something like that is my thing and I think it's great that more and more productions think true to the motto of my comedy program: "Isn't it possible? Isn't there!"
