Actually, it should only be a short overview article with links to click on, but then the large number of recordings that can be accessed on the Internet (over 500) have the pronounced, worldwide interest in the song, the reading into its history, the biographies of the main actors, as well as thought-provoking side effects, meant that the explanations became a bit longer. As a precaution, the author asks for forgiveness...

By Robert Schlickewitz

If you don't just want to hear the music offered here and don't want to go straight to the links, but want to read it first, you will find it in this order: The story of Hava nagila, a collection of quotes about Hava nagila, the biography of Abraham Zvi Idelsohn, a short bio on Moshe Nathanson, one chapter each on the lyrics of Hava nagila, on Hava nagila in sports, on Hava nagila in anti-Israel propaganda, on Hava nagila kitsch, on the performers of Hava nagila.

The author asks for as much feedback as possible, additions, suggestions for improvement, etc.

Story of a special song

Hava nagila evolved from a nigun. This is the name given to a melody that the religious Jews of Eastern Europe either hummed in groups or sang in syllables like "ai-ai-ai". Sometimes niggunim (plural) also received verses from the Bible or other important religious writings over time. The nigun, which later became Hava nagila, is attributed to the Hasids of Sadagora, which is now in Ukraine and then belonged to the Russian Tsarist Empire, and is associated with the name of Rabbi Yisroel Friedman (around 1850) from Ruzhin.

As a reminder: Russian Jews lived a life full of deprivation as second-class people with few prospects in oppression at that time - due to the feudal structures and due to the prevailing, unrelenting, Christian intolerance.

It is believed that said Nigun came to Palestine via emigrants in the first decade of the 20th century and initially spread out in smaller circles, still without a text.

During his research into the actual, original, true core of Hebrew musical culture, even before the First World War, the Jewish scholar Abraham Zvi Idelsohn, who was also born in the Russian Tsarist Empire, came across this Nigun of the Sadigors and added it to his collection. He already had the necessary equipment to make sound recordings on site and thus preserve rare songs for posterity.

There are two conflicting versions of the further career of Hava nagila from this point in time and up to the present, both of which have found numerous supporters up in academic circles.

According to one, it is said to have been said Idelsohn who wrote the lyrics to the melody. On the other hand, if one follows the second version, Idelsohn asked the students in his class to come up with a suitable text. The contribution, which was rated as the best and came from Jerusalem-born Moshe Nathanson, later found its way into the songbooks as Hava nagila.

With lyrics attached to whoever is right, the song quickly found fans throughout Palestine, and it was also played on official occasions, such as the Balfour Declaration celebrations. Idelsohn first published Hava nagila in one of his song books in 1922. The first recording was made in the same year, which was later distributed by Polyphonwerke AG Berlin under the brand name "Polyphon Record".

It soon became customary for the Jews of Palestine to play Hava nagila at weddings and other celebrations and to dance afterwards, preferably in the style of the Hora dance brought from Romania.

Zionists, who engaged in lively exchanges between the United States and Palestine, may be responsible for the song finding its way across the Atlantic in the interwar period. There it established itself as a "Hebrew folk song" or "folk song from Palestine" and enjoyed increasing popularity.

During the 1920s and 1930s, Jewish songbooks appeared in Palestine, Germany, and the United States containing the music and lyrics of Hava nagila.

When survivors immigrated to Palestine after the Shoah, some brought with them the songs of the region they came from, often including variants of Hava nagila.

After the founding of the state of Israel, the song became a kind of symbol for passionate construction spirit and hard work. American Jews, who followed the prosperity of the Jewish state with great interest and took their impressions home with them, became aware of Hava nagila and ensured a second import into the new world.

In the meantime, a marketing product had developed, albeit on a modest level, from the initial import, albeit still only among American Jews. For example, there are film documents from the early 1950s showing the Malavsky family of Ukrainian-American musicians performing Hava nagila.

At some point in that decade even non-Jewish arrangers and producers must have recognized the potential of this song. In any case, it is generally assumed that it was the two multicultural talents Harry Belafonte and Connie Francis who gave the initial spark in the second half of the 1950s. From this point on, more and more important, and also less important, artists played Hava nagila and the song could become a real mass hit.

The wave of success soon returned to the old continent, where, among others, the French singer of Italian descent, Dalida, who came from Egypt, adopted the former Nigun in 1958.

In the end, there was hardly a country untouched by Hava nagila. The song even wandered through the “Iron Curtain”, which separated the two so irreconcilably opposed blocks until 1989, and thus returned to its geographical starting point. (Probably not without reason the Wikipedia entries of the Ukrainians and Belarusians on Hava nagila are the most extensive of all countries!).

Of course, various other forms of marketing followed. Hava nagila has appeared on various stages, found its way into films (ru.wiki alone lists ten different films and TV series!), as well as television and radio broadcasts.

Of interest are certain aspects of the reception that Hava nagila has enjoyed or is enjoying among different generations in the United States.

In the 1960's and 1970's, Hava nagila was simply a part of established Jewish American circles, among people who were firmly entrenched in life and work, as part of the festival and holiday culture. The song fell into disrepute among the rebellious young generation who questioned the world of their parents because it was associated with philistinism and bourgeoisie and was rejected as a “kitsch classic”. Now, however, the Despisers of yore stand where their parents once stood, in the midst of life, and some have become downright enthusiastic Havanagila fans. At least that was the experience of the American filmmaker Roberta Grossman, who shot the documentary “Hava nagila – (The Movie)” in 2012.

The strip also impressively shows the extent to which Hava nagila has become part of (all) American and world culture: Whether it's with the Simpsons, or the Muppets, or in a personality show, wherever, you had to open yourself up catch the characteristic bars of the melody. And, surprisingly, not only when a proxy or symbol for "Jewish" or Judaism was needed. No, Hava nagila, the versatile Hava nagila, sounded and still sounds when chaos, confusion, pride, ecstasy, enthusiasm, joy, desire to dance, positive attitude to life, humor, sociability, togetherness, group well-being, identity, the feeling of oneself to be able to identify with someone or something, to suggest security, nostalgia etc. (This, at any rate, was confirmed to the author recently by 11 acquaintances from seven countries who were interviewed by email.)

Abraham Zvi Idelsohn

Abraham Zvi Idelsohn (Abraham Zevi Idelsohn, Avrohom Tzvi Idelsohn, Ābrams Zevi Idelsons, Авраам Цви Идельсон, Авраам Цві Ідельсон) was born in 1882 in Felixberg, now part of the Russian Empire, now near Jurkalne, Latvia, a fishing village on the Baltic Sea and grew up Libau, where his father, a ritual slaughterer and chazan (synagogue prayer leader), had taken up a new position.

Together with his music-loving father, little Abraham kept going to the Libau "Chor-School", where Mordechai Rabinovitz worked as Chasan Abraham.

From the age of twelve, Idelsohn studied at various Lithuanian Yeshivas until he decided to pursue a secular education and passed the entrance exam for a grammar school. A little later he temporarily took up studies, but his passion for music led him back to the above-mentioned teacher Rabinovitz. This lined him up in his choir and took over his training.

As Idelsohn later relates in his memoirs, at that time he was an avid reader of modern Hebrew literature, such as the poetry of Moshe Chaim Luzzatto (1707-1746) and the Zionist writings of Achad Ha'am (1856-1927), and he was inspired by strongly influence these authors.

Since, after careful reflection, he saw the need to complete his studies, Idelsohn moved from Libau to Berlin in the spring of 1901, where he became a student in the opera class at the famous Stern Conservatory. Here he, the son of a pious family, had the opportunity to observe the attitude of various German Jews towards their non-Jewish environment and the judgment he passed on them was not positive. What is more, he developed a strong aversion to German-tinged, chauvinistic views and immoral behavior on the part of Jews. As a particularly chilling example, he remembered the head of the conservatory, the converted Jew and, in his eyes, a fanatical German patriot, Gustav Hollaender.

Several reasons, including the intensive and appealing reading of Tolstoy, ultimately led to Idelsohn giving up his studies and deciding to go to Palestine as a simple farmer. However, he postponed this project, for the time being in order to learn cantor singing in Augsburg. As in Berlin, he felt that the foreign influences were too predominant and that the subject of the course was not sufficiently Jewish.

So he didn't stay long and left the southern German city, this time for Leipzig. The fact that a chasan was being sought in the Saxon city may have been one of the decisive factors in his decision. In any case, Idelsohn got the job, and he also took the opportunity to perfect his education at the Leipzig Conservatory. There was another reason why the stay in Leipzig had a certain meaning for him. Here he met his future wife, the daughter of the cantor H. Schneider(or: Schnieder). However, this personal bond did not prevent the restless from reorienting himself again soon. Because Leipzig's spiritual Jewish life, both in the liberal and in the orthodox community, as he later recalled, had fallen too far into Germanization, Idelsohn prepared to move again, although he stayed in Germany for the time being . After all, he stayed for two more years as Chasan or Schochet in Regensburg, Bavaria.

Only a letter from his relatives in Johannesburg, South Africa, with the message that a Chasan was being sought there, was able to bring about his detachment from Germany and thus the move to another continent.

A brief digression is permitted at this point.

Should the observations and findings of Idelsohn in relation to the willingness and ability to acculturate of German Jews, which not only affected their (German-Jewish) identity, but quite obviously even reached deep into the practice of their religion, be confirmed on a broader basis , this is proof of how intense the Jewish affinity (affinity, reverence, love...) for the German 'dominant culture' of that time must have actually been. It is all the more disgraceful to assess how this 'dominant culture' later dealt with its unconditional worshipers, admirers and most loyal companions.

As was to be expected, Idelsohn did not find the 'pure' Jewish spiritual life he had longed for in his new place of work either, and so he turned to Jerusalem with a deep-felt need to explore authentic Jewish song.

In the course of his studies there, he came to realize that Jewish influences from many countries determined the sacred musical life of the Holy City and that he could only get to the 'core' if he had sufficient material for comparison. So he began to record and collect what he found in sometimes very different communities.

The phonogram archives in Vienna and Berlin found out about Idelsohn's activities and support him by providing him with the most modern sound recording equipment available at the time.

The music researcher later summarized his main findings as follows:

In Vienna, Idelsohn was able to scientifically process his recordings for several months and he received the necessary financial means to publish his work.

Since at that time, more precisely in 1913, the Eleventh Congress of the Zionists was taking place in Vienna and there were points of contact, Idelsohn met the later Israeli national poet Chaim Nachman Bialik. He asked the scholar to write some articles for his journal "R'shumoth".

Back in Jerusalem, Idelsohn's teaching activities were in the foreground. When the First World War broke out a little later, however, he was soon assigned an assignment and a position as hospital secretary. After word of his profession as a musician got around to his superiors, he was appointed conductor of a music corps stationed in Gaza.

It was only in 1919 that Idelsohn was able to resume his usual teaching and research activities, albeit only temporarily, because his latest research was also to be published and the opportunities for this were only available in Europe. Idelsohn's stay on the old continent coincided with the twelfth Zionist Congress (September 1921), this time held in Karlsbad, Czech Republic, under the chairmanship of Nachum Sokolow, and in which he attended. His ultimately fruitful efforts to sell as many of his works as possible to publishers kept him in Berlin for about a year.

When Idelsohn received an offer from the USA to present his research there, he accepted. Warmly welcomed to the New World, he was soon entrusted with the cataloging of a valuable collection at the library of the Hebrew Union College (HUC) in Cincinnati, and he was also given a generous teaching position.

In 1924 Idelsohn moved to Cincinnati and became a professor of Hebrew, liturgy and Jewish music. He used his free time to add four more volumes to his main work, known as the “Thesaurus”. This time, funding for the publication came from the American Council of Learned Societies.

New fields of research in the disciplines of liturgy, poetry, intonation of Hebrew words, etc. opened up and were immediately implemented scientifically by Idelsohn.

Academic periodicals regularly reprinted his essays on songs sung in choir or solo, on music theory in Hebrew, and on comparative studies for years to come.

In 1929, Idelsohn began to show symptoms of a serious illness, which two years later led to symptoms of paralysis, which initially prevented further teaching or research work, but soon completely ruled them out. His university put him on early retirement and provided him with a pension that was to be paid out until the end of his life. In 1937 Idelsohn traveled to his family in Johannesburg, where he died on August 14 of the following year.

Idelsohn's life's work consists primarily of his "Thesaurus of Hebrew Oriental Melodies", in which he placed particular emphasis on researching Jewish-Yemeni songs, because he suspected that this group contained the least falsified traditions. Further work on the transmission of musical culture in the Jewish communities of Babylonia, Persia, Bukhara, the Oriental Sephardim, the Moroccans, the Jews of Germany and Eastern Europe, the Hasids in Palestine and the Hasids of the diaspora followed. His Hebrew songbook, titled Sefer Hashirim, published in 1922, contained Hava nagila for the first time. During the years in Cincinnati, Idelsohn taught, based on the Birnbaum Collection, which he researched at the same time, including the historical development of Jewish liturgy and special aspects of cantor singing. He also achieved far-reaching results in the field of comparative music research, for example in the comparison of Christian and Jewish liturgy. In "The Maqamen of Arabic Music" from 1913 he had examined the different maqam systems of the peoples of the Middle East for similarities and contrasts. The number of sound recordings made by Idelsohn exceeds the thousand limit.

The importance of his life's work is now internationally unanimously assessed as outstanding, although the individual assessments set very different priorities. As an example, the popular scientific appraisals of Idelsohn by uk.wiki, de.wiki, ru.wiki and en.wiki are compared. Unlike a number of other wiki entries, the Idelsohn entry was not just copied and translated, but authors of these four languages contributed very different individual statements on the subject of their explanations. A statement by ru.wiki is likely to be of particular interest to German-speaking readers, namely that Idelsohn also included German minne singing in his diverse research.

Another digression at this point:

It would certainly be a worthwhile undertaking to subject the Jewish scholar's relationship, which oscillated between dislike and affection for Germany and German culture, to a thorough investigation.

Jewish Music in Its Historical Development, 1929, 1968), «Єврейський літургія» (на англійський мові, англ.

Idelsohn's outstanding achievement lies in his discovery of the oriental Jewish communities with their traditional musical culture and in expanding the general knowledge of Jewish music from the Ashkenazi to the Sephardic and Middle Eastern traditions. His more than 1000 field recordings are of inestimable value, since the conditions of cultural isolation under which they were taken no longer exist today. He was one of the first ethnomusicologists to give oral traditions the same weight as written ones for research purposes. In addition to his musical and liturgical studies, he also researched oriental languages and poetry as well as the Arabic maqam techniques. He made comparisons between the ancient Hebrew and early Christian liturgy, ie both Gregorian chant and Byzantine and Jacobite chants. (en.wiki)

Thesaurus of Hebrew Oriental Melodies, (ru.wiki)

Idelsohn is generally acknowledged as the "father" of modern Jewish musicology. During his time in Jerusalem, he noted a great diversity of musical traditions among the Jews living in the region. Idelsohn examined these traditional melodies and found recurring motifs and progressions that were not found in any other national music. This suggested a common origin for musical phrases that went back to Israel/Palestine in the first century CE He found that these motifs fell into three distinct tonal centers, which corresponded to the Dorian, Phrygian, and Lydian modes of the ancient Greeks. Each of these modes elicited a distinct psycho-emotional response. The Dorian Mode was used for texts of an elevated and inspired nature; the Phrygian for sentimental texts, with their very human outbursts of feeling, both of joy and grief; and the Lydian was used in composing music for the texts of lamenting and confessions of sins. Idelsohn further categorized and defined these motives as ones that either prepared a musical phrase, began it, or concluded it. (en.wiki)

A grandson of Abraham Zvi Idelsohn achieved a considerable reputation as a human rights lawyer in the apartheid state of South Africa: The atheist and humanist, as well as Joel Goodman Joffe, Baron Joffe (1932 – 2017), who was honored with many high honors and awards.

Moses Nathanson

Moshe Nathanson (Mosze Natanson, Моше Натанзон, Машэ Натанзон) was born in Jerusalem in 1899, the son of Rabbi Nahum Nathanson. He attended traditional religious school until the age of ten, after which he transferred to the Bet Sefer Lemel Branch of the Ezra School.

The choirmaster of this institution was Abraham Zvi Idelsohn.

In 1922 Nathanson emigrated to Canada, where he studied law and music at McGill University in Montreal/Quebec. Before he even got the degree he was aiming for, he transferred to the renowned New York Institute of Musical Art, now the Juillard School of Music.

In 1924 Nathanson accepted the position of cantor of the Society for the Advancement of Judaism, the newly established Reconstructionist movement in the United States, and remained there until his retirement in 1970.

Februar 1981 in Manhattan, New York, verstorben.

Hava nagila – Texte

Originaltext YOUTUBE:

Teddi Bear sing „Hava Nagila Bear“ and open the mouth, move the body

„This admirable Bear wears national Jewish outfit and performs traditional song Hava Nagila while moving to the music. He is guaranteed to steal the show at any Jewish celebration!“
