Jobs that are dying out: These 16 professions are affected
Why are professions dying out and which ones are hit the hardest?
Digitization has already penetrated all areas of the economy and has fundamentally changed most professional fields. Where computer programs create new opportunities and require people to acquire new skills, many are left behind. They are "digitized away". You can find out here where machines will take over our jobs in the future, which activities will change fundamentally and which professions will die out.
1. Milk technologist: inside
Fresh milk from the supermarket is actually not that fresh. It was processed with a lot of effort and machines so that it contains less fat and has a longer shelf life. So-called milk technicians are responsible for this. Their tasks include centrifugation, pasteurization, milk culture production and so on.
The profession of milk technologist is particularly at risk for two reasons. On the one hand, this job can already be automated to a good 90% and replaced by machines, according to Job-Futuromart. In addition, the dairy industry is changing fundamentally. There are already an incredible number of vegan alternatives to ordinary milk that are becoming more and more accepted in society. They are healthier, cause less CO2 and environmental damage and they taste even better for many people.
We are talking about oat, almond, soy, rice and cashew drinks. Will these drinks succeed in replacing milk? Probably not. But in 10 years we will definitely find a much better balance between milk and milk alternatives.
2. Closer: inside
The textile industry is changing rapidly. It is becoming faster and less sustainable, even if most large corporations claim that they produce “sustainably” or “take care of their employees.” The fact is that today most of our clothes are already made by sewers from poorer countries like originate from Bangladesh. They are produced there for starvation wages and bought here (for example in Germany), worn a few times and then thrown away again.
According to Job-Futuromarkt, seamstresses are 100% no longer needed in Germany, because having clothes produced here would simply be far too expensive.
Clothes vs. garments: in the past one said garments, today one says clothes. This already shows that we have lost respect for our outfits. used to be. a piece of clothing simply describes a worthless object.
3. Confectioners
Grandma bakes the most beautiful cakes anyway, there's nothing wrong with that. But all other baked goods are increasingly being made by machines. At a time when we can even print out dishes, hand-baking has largely become redundant for large-scale operations. This profession includes the following key areas: modelling, baking, making dough, glazing and refining recipes. According to Job-Futuromarkt, 70% of these tasks can be replaced.
4. Financial accountants
"Do something with finances! It's a totally secure job.” I can almost hear my parents nagging me. In the old days, keeping accounts in a company was really a very important and irreplaceable profession. Back then, you had to work with computer programs, understand and evaluate them, but a human hand was essential.
But digital accounting is getting better and better and the systems are becoming more sophisticated. In order to have financial accounting run completely automatically in the future, you will probably no longer need people in the future, but rather a solid data set that the computers can rely on. According to Job-Futuromat, the financial accountants will be 100% interchangeable with machines.
5. Brewers: Inside & Weintechnolog:innen
Dealing with beer or wine all day sounds like music to your ears? We can understand that very well. However, everyone should be aware that the professions of master brewer or wine expert will soon only be possible for a few. According to Job-Futuromarkt, up to 80% of these dream jobs can already be automated. For brewers, there are even 13 out of 14 daily activities that can be left to a machine. In ten years there will probably only be very few people who make the craft of brewing beer or wine pressing as a profession.
6. Miners
The miners, also known as miners, made sure that the raw materials were extracted from the ground and that we could process them further. In coal mining, coal was mined in order to use it for energy and electricity supply. Crude oil was also one of the most important raw materials. The most well-known location for mining in Germany is still the Ruhr area, even if the tunnels are no longer used today.
The entire mining industry is undergoing huge change, because digitization is automating a lot of the work of the miners. On the one hand, this leads to much more efficiency and, on the other hand, to greater security for the employees.
Today fewer miners have to go down the tunnels and do more monitoring tasks. Automatability for mining work is already 75%. Experts say that the profession of miner and machine operator can be replaced by 100%. Mountain mechanics can soon be replaced by 88%.
7. Nuclear power plant employees
Anyone who still works in the nuclear industry in Germany today should look around for a new job or a new home country as soon as possible. Germany has set itself the goal of phasing out nuclear energy by the end of 2022. More and more nuclear power plants are going offline.
However, things are different in other European countries. However, new plants are still being built in France, Poland and Italy. The largest nuclear power plant in Europe is in Finland and has just been completed.

8. Juwelier:innen
Anyone who still goes to a jeweller:innen today either has a surname of Geiss or is planning to get married soon. Thanks to fashion chains, Amazon and Co., cheap fashion jewelry is much more widespread than elegant pendants. So the trend is shifting away from quality jewelry worn for generations to more ephemeral fashion jewelry.
9. Newspaper reporter
Few would have expected that: But the job of reporter is also in danger. According to Career Cast, there will be a good 13% fewer newspaper reporters by 2022. This is not just because journalism is shifting from print to digital.
Another important factor is that the profession of journalist is not protected. Anyone can be a frenzied reporter on social media. Anyone can start their own blog and spread news or opinions. Let's hope that this doesn't get the conspiracy theorists even further on the scene and that good media don't die out.
10. Data typist
The profession of data typist is quickly explained: He or she takes data and numbers from online or offline documents and enters them into internal company systems. This position is still important for most trading companies, because contracts are often too complicated for computer programs to be automatically adopted.
But no one should rest on their laurels. The profession of data typist is already disappearing step by step. Algorithms and programs are getting better and AI collects more and more targeted data.
11. Travel agency employees
Classic travel agencies are becoming fewer and fewer, because everyone can put together their own trip easily via the Internet. We get the inspiration from Instagram, the research is done via TripAdvisor and the booking is completed via booking.com.
However, many have also started to get extensive advice from the travel agency and then still book their trip online.
12. Postman:innen
Let's be honest: when was the last time you sent a letter that didn't go to the employment office or an official place? How long ago? The postal clerk profession may not die out entirely, but it will be kept to a bare minimum. Experts from Career Cast are already assuming that a drop in recruitment of a good 28% can be expected by 2022.
13. Farmer:in
Agriculture has more income and turnover than ever before in human history. And yet far fewer farmers are working now than 50 years ago. Even though we eat a lot more meat. The reason for the decline is the machines that are making it easier and easier for farmers to get the job done. This profession is slowly but surely changing. It will not die out, but it will be able to employ far fewer people under it.
In an interview with an asparagus worker, we find out what it means to be systemically relevant in Corona times.
14. Flight attendants
Not because of digitization, but because the aviation industry itself is very controversial, flight attendants will also have a hard time in the future. The next few years should mean that we will fly less worldwide in order to offset the CO2 budget to some extent. Although this is good for the environment, flight attendants will suffer on a large scale.
During the Corona period, the company Ryanair even started to hand over the job of stewards and stewardesses to the pilots in the meantime.
15. Inspector:in
Everyone who carries out quality control professionally will sooner or later be able to be replaced by a machine. The problem with these jobs is that humans can never work as precisely as a machine. Because when a program is set up correctly, it never tires and can do exactly what it's told to do without making a careless mistake.
Editor's tip: Are you unhappy in your job anyway? Then maybe it's time to quit and start something new.
16. Warehouse workers
Many companies are already working on how best to let robots do the hard work of warehouse workers: inside. To a certain extent this will soon be possible. There will be far fewer people doing far less heavy work.
No hectic searching for the utensils, but a targeted movement of the machine. In the near future people will only be to monitor the machines.
There is also hope for dying professions
