If you want to have a great hairstyle despite the heat in summer, you can rely on hair bands. You want to sew yourself a hairband? We show you a great tutorial for a DIY turban hair band!

One thing is especially important in summer: hair off your face! But cool summer hairstyles that work for any hair length are hard to find.

A hair accessory that really suits everyone is the hair band! Whether long or short, whether curly or straight - hair bands are a must-have for everyone.

They save our hair, especially on hot days: because hair bands give us a cool style and they also keep our hair out of our faces.

If you want to make a hair band yourself, then you've come to the right place. We will show you instructions on how to sew your own turban hair band!

You will find out in this post

Everything you need to sew a hair band

So that you can sew a cool turban hair band yourself, you only need a few things. You will need two rectangles of jersey fabric.

You can get cuts in a sewing shop or, like us, simply take a basic oversized dress or jersey t-shirt. You can get a solid color or a printed one, they both look great!

Then you need a sewing machine. It is important that you have an extra jersey needle or an overlock sewing machine. You can't sew the fabric otherwise!

You will also need scissors or a rotary cutter to cut the fabric. You will also need an iron so that you can fix the seam later.

So again in short:

Once you have these four essentials, you're good to go!

Step by step instructions for sewing a hairband yourself

We will now show you a simple and quick guide to sewing a hairband.

preparation

You start by cutting the jersey fabrics. You need two pieces that have the same dimensions.

We took 24 cm in width and 60 cm in length. The length is based on your head circumference plus 3 cm. If there is too much, you can cut it off later.

You'll need to cut the fabric so that you can stretch the fabric lengthwise.

Sewing the hairband

Then it's time to sew the individual jersey strips together.

You lay them lengthwise on top of each other so that the left side or the one that will later be on the inside is on top. Then you pin everything in place with pins.

How much seam allowance you want to take is up to you, we recommend 1 cm. It is important that if you sew with a normal sewing machine, use an elastic stitch, i.e. a zigzag stitch.

It is also important that you use a special jersey needle with a regular sewing machine. Or you have an overlock machine that is great at sewing jersey either way.

When sewing, you should not pull on the fabric, but let it run through very loosely.

When you have sewn both fabrics together, turn them inside out.

Then you fold the fabrics so that the seam is in the middle.

To fix the seams, iron them once.

Now it's time to get down to business: lay one piece of fabric with the seam up and the other piece of fabric with the seam down across the first piece of fabric so that it looks like a cross.

Then you take the two ends of the underlying band together.

Finally, fold all four open ends together to create a pretty knot.

Try the hair band on now to be sure. If you previously took too much fabric in length, then cut off the excess fabric now.

Then sew the ends together with a zigzag stitch or an overlock machine.

And your self-sewn hair band is ready! But that was quick, wasn't it? 😊

Before you start sewing, we'll show you which headband color flatters your hair the most.

Which headband color suits your hair?

No matter what haircut you have, a headband always looks really great. Hair bands give a feminine yet casual look.

So that your new headband is particularly flattering to you, we will now show you which colors go best with your hair.

Brown hair

When you have brown hair, you have an incredible number of options. Because one thing is certain: bright colors suit you! Red and yellow look particularly fresh in brown hair, but blue, green, purple and pink are also ideal as hairband colors.

Berry or earth tones also suit you. They're intense, but not as flashy! If you like it simpler, you can also use beige tones. Black always works, of course!

Blonde hair

With blonde hair you also have a lot of choices. But if you don't want to look like Barbie's sister, then it's better to stay away from pastel tones or use the "candy colors" sparingly.

Something gaudy is needed! For example, red suits you very well. But khaki, light blue or gray also flatter you. White or beige give you an elegant look.

Red hair

If you have red hair, it can be pretty tricky sometimes. But I'm sure you know that! You should avoid tones like yellow with the exception of mustard yellow, red or orange, they are too similar to your hair.

Greens are made for you! But pale blue or gold are also something special for red-haired women. The brave can try pastel pink when they sew their own headband. The contrast makes you an eye-catcher!

black hair

Again, contrast is needed! Bright colors like yellow, pink, orange or red go perfectly with your black hair. Pastel tones are more likely to drown in your hair.

You should be careful with white, light colors do not suit all women with black hair. An intense purple is also ideal!

You are free to use the samples. Anything that pleases is allowed. Dotted, floral, striped or would you prefer a single colour?

It is important that you feel comfortable and wear your self-sewn hairband with pride. Because you can really be proud of your work!

3 tips for sewing the hair band yourself

  1. Before you start sewing, you should check if you have a jersey needle. You can't sew the fabric with a normal needle, it just runs.
  2. If you are not sure about the width of the headband, it is better to use a little less. If you want a narrower band, 20 cm wide is sufficient.
  3. No need to buy expensive jersey fabric at the fabric store! A basic oversized t-shirt or a t-shirt dress from the clothing store are perfect.

Our conclusion

Now you know how to sew a hair band yourself! With our instructions, it really is child's play. We can promise you one thing: with your self-sewn hair band you will feel like a queen with her crown!

So let's get to the sewing machine! Have fun sewing the turban hair band!
