What is an iron and how does it work?

An iron (also known as a "straightening iron" or "flat iron") is a household appliance used to straighten and shape all kinds of fabrics.

An iron always consists of two main components: the handle and a heatable plate, the soleplate, which is heated in different ways depending on the model. Nowadays, irons are usually heated by electric heating elements on the hot plate. The heated ironing soleplate of the iron is placed directly on the piece of textile to be ironed and brushed over by this or ironed smooth gradually.

The piece of textile should ideally be slightly damp, so that the heat energy generated by the iron can be transported more easily and effectively from the evaporated moisture into the interior of the textile. By supplying the thermal energy, the fiber bonds of the piece of textile are temporarily broken and the fibers are thus softened. This allows the textiles to be shaped or smoothed better, more easily and more effectively. Pieces of textile that have become crumpled or wrinkled through use or washing can be brought back into shape.

Areas of application – irons in use

In principle, irons can be used for textiles of all kinds. This includes different items of clothing (trousers, shirts, sweaters, shirts, etc.), but also bed or table linen. While ironing always remains the same in principle, regardless of the fabric to be ironed, the individual fabrics have different characteristics that should be taken into account when ironing. This applies above all to the temperature at which the respective fabrics can be ironed. Depending on their properties, individual fabrics can react differently to the thermal energy generated by the iron compared to others.

Modern irons are therefore equipped with temperature controls so that the temperature on the soleplate can be set or changed accordingly depending on the fabric. Irons usually have at least three heat settings: 110°C as the lowest, 150°C as the middle and 220°C as the highest. In addition, a thermostat with bimetallic strips is usually attached to the iron, which warns the user of overheating. Which temperature level is right for which fabric can be tested with an experiment or found out by looking at the textile care symbols on the respective fabric. The use of the iron itself is quite simple and easy to learn.

What types of irons are there?

There are basically two types of iron: the steam iron on the one hand and the dry iron on the other. The steam iron is identified by a water tank. The water tank is filled with water, which is then converted into steam and automatically moistens the textiles to be ironed. Due to the steam on the textiles, the heat from the soleplate can be transferred particularly efficiently into the textile fibers. This usually leads to better results when ironing and makes the entire handling of the ironing process a lot easier. In comparison, the dry iron works accordingly without this steam system.

When using one of these, the user must ensure that the textiles are properly moistened before the start of the ironing process. Due to the lack of steam, higher temperatures are also usually required for effective smoothing of the textile fabrics, which can lead to damage with more sensitive types of fabric. On the other hand, dry irons are usually a lot cheaper compared to the steam version. Nevertheless, the steam iron has now established itself quite clearly as the more popular variant on the global market.

Within the area of steam irons, however, other types can be distinguished:

The particularly powerful but also comparatively more expensive steam iron station, in which the water tank is separate from the steam generator, the travel iron, which is less powerful in comparison but also more compact and is therefore well suited for taking with you when travelling, and the cordless steam iron , which works wirelessly using a rechargeable battery, making it particularly handy. However, this requires regular charging, which can often interrupt the ironing process. Which type is right for you ultimately depends on your personal priorities when ironing.

Leading 7 manufacturer brands

Almost every modern household in the world has at least one iron these days. The manufacturer market for irons is therefore just as large. Below is some brief information on seven leading manufacturer brands in Germany and around the world:

AEG is a traditional German brand that was originally founded in Berlin in 1883. The company produced electrical appliances for a century that were sold worldwide. In the 1970s and 1980s, however, the company ran into increasing difficulties and finally had to file for bankruptcy in 1982. So while the company no longer exists, the brand continues to sell household appliances of all kinds, including irons. Like all products of the traditional AEG brand, AEG irons stand for reliability and quality. Bosch is a versatile and traditional German company. The company from Stuttgart, founded in 1886 by the German industrialist and engineer Robert Bosch, is known worldwide as an automotive supplier, manufacturer of tools and safety and packaging technology, but above all as a manufacturer of household electronics. Last but not least, the wide range of products from Bosch also includes irons. These are offered by Bosch in different price segments, but always with the consistently high quality standards that Bosch has been making for over a century.Braun is a German manufacturer of small electrical appliances. The company was founded in Frankfurt am Main in 1921 and is now based in Kronberg im Taunus (Hesse). The company has belonged to the US conglomerate Procter & Gamble since 2005, but this has not changed the quality of Braun products. In the area of irons, too, Braun offers devices for the comparatively more demanding and above-average price segments.Philips is a Dutch company based in Amsterdam. The Dutch company, which is one of the largest Dutch companies of all, was founded in 1891 and now has several divisions, including a division in the field of medical technology. In the field of household electronics, Philips has been offering irons for many years. The irons from Philips are characterized by versatile designs and properties, but are also available in the lower price segments. The origin of the traditional German brand Rowenta goes back to 1884, when the company originally operated under the name "Weintraud & Comp" in Offenbach am Main (Hesse) was founded. In 1909, the company was renamed Rowenta, based on the name of the founder, Robert Weintraud. The brand has been producing irons since the 1920s, making it one of the oldest manufacturers still active in this area. Rowenta now belongs to the French electronics group Groupe SEB, but this has not harmed the popularity of Rowenta products. Severin is another traditional German company. Severin was founded in 1892 by the founder and namesake Anton Severin, initially as a blacksmith shop and then as a regular company in 1921. The company is based in Sundern (North Rhine-Westphalia) and has an extremely diverse range of products. This has also included irons for several decades. Severin primarily focuses on quality products for the lower price segments.Tefal is a French brand with a focus on cookware and household electronics. Tefal was founded in 1956 and is based in the small town of Rumilly in south-eastern France. The brand has been fully owned by the French electronics group Groupe SEB since 1968. Especially in recent years, Tefal has increasingly established itself as one of the world's leading brands in the field of irons. The Tefal products are primarily located in the middle and higher price segments.

This is how irons are tested

Irons can be tested according to various characteristics (see test criteria in the iron test). In addition to an initial examination and inspection, the basis for this is usually a practical test or a sample, an experiment or a test run of the respective model. Among other things, the performance, efficiency, handling or reliability of a model can be analyzed and then compared with other models.

The product test is always based on both objective and subjective factors. The test result of the individual factors, both objective and subjective, can be evaluated in a test using a specific performance scale or test score or described in words, depending on the way the external test teams work. For the Iron Test 2022, numerous such test results were considered, compared in a juxtaposition and finally included in the evaluation. On this basis, we were able to construct the test or comparison table below, determine the comparison winners and thus enable you to compare them.

Test criteria in the iron test 2022

For the formation of the comparison table in the iron test 2022, seven specific test criteria for the examination and comparison of the individual models were decisive. Depending on which of the test criteria are important to you personally, you can weigh the various factors to varying degrees when comparing the models or when making your final purchase decision. In the following, these seven most important test criteria of our iron test should be mentioned and briefly explained:

Steam generation and steam boost

With steam irons, the amount of (constant) steam generation is probably the most important performance test criterion. The greater the constant steam generation, the greater the amount of steam that is separated out during ironing. The more steam that gets into a fabric, the more the fabric fibers swell, making it easier and more efficient to iron. The other way round, this means that you have to iron more persistently with an iron that has a comparatively lower steam production in order to achieve the same effect.

The amount of steam generated by the iron is usually expressed in grams per minute (g/s). Every steam iron should be able to generate a steam volume of at least 10 g/s, otherwise there is hardly any noticeable advantage over the dry iron.

On the other hand, a constant steam generation of 30 to 40 g/s can be completely sufficient for the simplest ironing work. For more demanding users, however, there are also models with constant steam volumes of 50 to 70 g/s or even more. In addition to the mainly, constantly generated steam, many manufacturers also offer a so-called (extra) steam boost or a vertical steam function. This extra steam boost is primarily intended for treating particularly stubborn creases on items of clothing that are difficult to iron (e.g. suits).

The most modern steam irons today almost always have steam bursts of over 100 g/s, while the most powerful devices can even shine with values over 200, 300 or even 400 g/s. In the 2022 iron test, the amount of steam that can be generated and the steam boost of each device were taken into account in the external product test and given in the test table. How important this test criterion is for you personally depends primarily on which fabrics you primarily want to iron or will iron.

Philips GC4909/60 steam iron Azur in the test - the Quick Calc Release system allows the lime to be removed in less than 15 seconds

descaling system

Limescale naturally builds up in steam irons, especially in steam ironing stations, after a certain period of time. How quickly limescale forms depends primarily on the degree of water hardness in your region (the higher the water hardness, the faster limescale forms). During the ironing process, the limescale deposits can get onto your clothes or laundry and cause unsightly brown or white stains there. Limescale can also have a negative effect on the steam output and lifespan of the iron in the long term. Regular descaling of the iron is therefore essential.

The best models have so-called descaling systems or descaling functions. The steam iron warns the user when descaling is necessary and also facilitates the descaling process itself. Whether a device has such a decalcification system or not is another important test criterion. So if you decide on a steam iron and especially if you live in a region with comparatively high water hardness, you should do the iron test necessarily pay attention to the fact that a model has a descaling system.

handling

The test criterion of handling is another important, and often underestimated, factor when considering different irons. The best irons should ideally be easy to hold and just as easy on the ironing board or on the fabric to be ironed can be moved here. A user should be able to iron with the iron for a longer period of time without being hindered by the unfavorable handling of the device.

Positive handling also includes the easiest possible start-up of the iron and the easiest possible setting of the temperature level and any other available functions. The external test teams mostly tested the handling of the models considered in the test themselves with a sample or a test run and included them in the evaluation. In the iron test 2022, the handling was also taken into account in our analysis and test score. Especially if you often have to iron longer, you should also take the handling as a test criterion seriously.

cable length

Another often overlooked test criterion is the cord length of an iron. The longer the cable length, the more flexibility you have in terms of bracket location. Conversely, shorter cords restrict you and can make the ironing process that much less convenient.

The usual cable lengths for irons are in the range of two to three meters. How important the cable length test criterion is for you and which cable length is the right one for you naturally depends on your individual situation. But especially if you want to remain flexible with regard to the place where you iron, you should make sure that the cable is long enough.

In the case of cordless irons, this test criterion can of course be neglected. The battery life of the iron plays a role here.

Philips GC4909/60 steam iron Azur in test – Soleplate: SteamGlide Elite

Material of the soleplate

The soleplate is ultimately the most important part of every iron. The material of this is consequently another test criterion that needs to be considered. For an efficient ironing process, the soleplate must glide over the textiles as easily as possible and must not scratch it under any circumstances. Although traces of wear and tear are unavoidable at some point, how long the soleplate can glide over your fabrics depends primarily on the material from which the soleplate is made.

In general, three different materials are used for the soleplate: Aluminum soleplates are quite cheap and also quite scratch-resistant, but due to their roughness they do not slide as easily in comparison. Manufacturers therefore use soleplates made of stainless steel much more frequently. Although these are a bit more expensive in comparison, they have about the same scratch resistance and significantly better gliding properties than the aluminum version.

The highest quality and perhaps the best soleplates are made of ceramic, but they usually cost more compared to other types of material. In addition to the main material, many irons also have special coatings that can significantly increase scratch resistance and the ironing experience. Either way, you should always focus on the test criterion of the soleplate material when weighing up the individual irons.

water tank

Every steam iron includes a water tank in which the water to be evaporated during the ironing process must be filled. The larger the water tank, the less often it is necessary to refill it with new water. The size of the water tank is another test criterion to be considered in our test.

Bügeleisen Test 2022 • Die 11 besten Bügeleisen im Vergleich

A water tank should ideally have a capacity of at least 300 millimeters, as from this volume it can be assumed that the water supply will be sufficient for most ironing processes. However, on the other hand, a larger water tank usually results in a noticeably heavier weight of the device. Especially with travel irons, for example, a smaller water tank can also be an advantage. The ideal size of the water tank ultimately depends on your personal priorities. The iron test 2022 shows you all the sizes of the water tanks of the respective steam irons and thus enables you to make a comparison.

quality

As with any product test, the quality of the individual models also plays a major role in irons. Basically, the higher the quality of an iron, the longer its service life. In addition to reliable performance and function, the quality aspects also include the processing of the entire device. The best irons, for example, should have a solid, robust housing and be able to withstand a reasonable amount of falls.

The external test teams were able to assess the quality of each model tested by means of precise controls and suitability tests. In the iron test 2022, the quality is therefore also a test criterion and a factor for the test result.

Common shortcomings and weaknesses – what to look out for when buying an iron!

In addition to the many test criteria that you can compare for your purchase decision, there are of course also some typical defects and weak points that make a corresponding iron appear less attractive:

Too short longevity

Many users complain again and again about the comparatively short period in which a purchased iron works perfectly. A device often lasts just a little longer than the warranty period and will soon need to be replaced. Unfortunately, it is difficult to determine the longevity of an iron before making a purchase, but there are at least a few indications that in many cases can indicate a relatively long service life.

This includes the qualitative processing of the iron, the material of the soleplate and, in a broader sense, the manufacturer's brand. The higher the quality of an iron, the less susceptible it is to damage after falls or other stresses. A high-quality soleplate, on the other hand, is less prone to scratches, which can significantly impair the function of the iron.

The manufacturer brand can also give some conclusions about the longevity, because the better known a brand is, the more important the reputation among customers plays a role for it. No brand wants to be said that their own products quickly broke down. A long service life for devices of all kinds often has a high purchase price in comparison, but in the long term this acquired quality can pay off strongly.

Uncomfortable handling

As already mentioned, the handling of irons is often underestimated as a test criterion for the purchase decision. Conversely, poor handling of irons is a weakness that is often noted.

The iron can be perfectly made, work reliably and get hot enough, but if the device feels bad in your hand, the ironing experience will still be ruined in the long run. Irons should therefore be as comfortable as possible in the hand and glide easily over the textiles. One indication of comparatively poor handling can be the weight of the iron, among other things. The heavier the device, the more difficult it is to handle. In terms of gliding, on the other hand, soleplates made of aluminum are prone to uncomfortable ironing.

dripping water

One of the most common iron faults is a leaking or dripping soleplate. The water from the water tank (unevaporated) out of the soleplate.

Not only does this waste water unnecessarily and make the clothes you are ironing wet, but it can also negatively affect the overall functioning of the iron. In order to avoid such a defect, the quality of a model should be examined in detail before the purchase decision is made. The higher the quality of an iron (see corresponding test criterion), the more robust the workmanship is in comparison, which can greatly reduce the likelihood of water leaking.

Iron does not get hot enough

Different fabrics have different properties. Some of these are harder to iron than others. With these fabrics, which are more difficult to straighten in comparison, a higher heat development is necessary so that effective ironing is possible. However, many irons do not generate the necessary heat and are therefore more or less unsuitable for ironing certain textiles.

In order to buy an iron that can be used as universally as possible, it should be made clear in advance that the device has a temperature controller with at least three stages. As an additional test criterion, attention should also be paid to the performance (usually given in watts). In principle, it can be assumed that a more powerful device can generate more heat than its less powerful counterpart.

Soleplate too rough

As mentioned, the best irons should ideally glide over fabrics as easily as possible. But especially with fabrics that are a little more difficult to iron, ironing a soleplate that is too rough can cause wrinkles rather than removing them.

It is therefore important to use a smooth soleplate. As already explained in the fifth test criterion, a soleplate made of aluminum stands for a certain roughness. However, special coatings greatly improve the gliding ability of aluminum soleplates, with the same advantages (lightweight and scratch-resistant).

Internet vs. specialist shops: where is the best place to buy my iron?

Irons can now be bought both in specialty stores and on the Internet. The advantages of buying on-site in a specialist shop are obvious, in the truest sense of the word. Here you can usually test a device or carry out a small practical test or experiment and carry out a suitability test or an experiment on your own. In return, the Internet offers you a much larger selection in comparison. You are not tied to the product range of a single specialist shop and can select your desired model at different prices from different suppliers and all of this from the comfort of your own home.

Nowadays, most online shops also offer a fairly uncomplicated right of return, so that you can carry out the test and practical inspection of an iron you have ordered at home and, if in doubt, send it back without any problems and get a full refund of the purchase price. From this point of view, buying your iron online seems to be the best and most convenient option these days.

The evolution of the iron over time

The principle of ironing has been known since the 3rd century AD. Back then, the Chinese used glowing coals mixed with sand to smooth silk robes. However, the iron as such was not invented in Europe until the 15th century. The irons of the time consisted of a handle and a large metal plate that had to be heated on an oven plate before ironing. A further development was the so-called flat iron from the late 17th century.

Here, a plate previously heated on the fire was inserted into a cavity within the iron body of the iron, which subsequently heated the soleplate. Over time, the heated plate in the cavity was gradually replaced by glowing briquettes or coals. Finally, in the late 19th century, the gas iron was invented. This was the first iron that did not have to be manually heated in advance. Instead, the irons were connected directly to the gas line or to an external gas burner and heated up in this way.

With the increasing electrification of the world in the late 19th, but especially in the early 20th century, the gas-powered iron was quickly replaced by the electric iron. However, this was initially a dry iron. It was only in the second half of the 20th century that the next development towards the steam iron took place, which automatically moistened the textiles with the water filled in and thus delivered the most efficient ironing results. In the 21st century, cordless, battery-powered steam irons are also becoming increasingly popular.

Numbers, dates, facts about the iron

The iron has long since established itself as standard equipment in every modern household in the developed world. Ironing is also one of the most common household chores. With the importance of the iron, a large, global manufacturer market for the wrinkle-smoothing household appliance also developed. Worldwide, the turnover generated from irons sold has been above the billion mark for years.

According to an official survey, the USA is the largest sales market with a market volume equivalent to around 613 million euros. Far behind in second place is Germany with a market volume of around 94 million euros. The annual per capita turnover that the iron manufacturers make in this country was 1.13 euros in 2018. The average price of an iron in Germany is around 29 euros. The average age of irons in German households shows that there are still increasing sales opportunities for iron manufacturers in Germany.

According to a study, this is comparatively low at 2.4 years, but according to the same survey or study, around 42.5% of households in Germany own an iron that is more than six years old. Almost half of the population will therefore need a new iron in the coming years.

Safety instructions when using an iron

Basically, irons are considered to be quite safe compared to many other household appliances. However, the iron develops temperatures of over 100°C during operation, which means that there is a general risk of burns. If you have children in your household in particular, you should therefore stow the iron away safely and keep a close eye or your hands on it during the ironing process. Any unused hot water left in the water tank should be poured out immediately after the ironing process. Another danger results from possible overheating of the device.

However, most modern models today are equipped with overheating protection for this purpose. In your search and suitability test of irons, this should be another important test criterion. In addition, most newer models are also equipped with an automatic switch-off and acoustic warning signals, which warn, for example, if you put the iron with the hot soleplate first on the ironing table and thus risk burns on the ironing board or elsewhere.

Obwohl grundsätzlich alle Bügeleisen vom Prinzip her eine hohe Kongruenz bzw.

Jahrhundert in Europa erfunden.

Was heißt Bügeleisen auf Englisch?
