Celebrities advertise the latest anti-aging cream in magazines, and bloggers (usually also for a fee) recommend products for radiant skin on Instagram. But what do professionals use privately - and what would they advise against? The KURIER asked four dermatologists.
Be careful with natural ingredients
"I would not apply creams with emulsifiers, balsam of Peru or irritating ingredients (such as sodium, lanolin, formaldehyde, petroleum products) on my face," says dermatologist Babak Adib. "I would also advise caution with natural substances such as propolis, chamomile and menthol, as they can cause contact allergies - like any cosmetic product. It is therefore best to try it out thinly on the forearm first."
Stay away from toothpaste
"Toothpaste doesn't help against pimples," warns Hajnal Kiprov, dermatologist and founder of the private clinic Kiprov. "Menthol does have an anti-inflammatory effect, but the dosage is much too low. The fluorides it contains also irritate the skin. So hands off!"

Be careful with cleaning brushes
"Never use cleaning sponges or brushes, as they are always damp and bacteria, but especially fungi (which love it warm and damp) can settle on them," says dermatologist Barbara Franz use dead skin cells. In addition, the Viennese advises against the use of fabric softener. "This is where the unwanted reversal of charges occurs, which has a negative effect on our skin. The skin is deprived of moisture, which becomes dry and sensitive as a result."
Urea not for sensitive people
"I'm not a fan of urea. Urea is too aggressive for my sensitive skin. I get irritant dermatitis (note: skin rash) from it," says dermatologist Kerstin Ortlechner. "My skin care product, which I couldn't live without, is a serum with high-quality antioxidants. Every day we are exposed to factors such as stress, UV light and pollution, which create oxygen free radicals and thus destroy the body's collagen, lead to increased wrinkling and skin cells damage. With the antioxidants that bind these free O2 radicals, I can protect myself to a certain extent."
