Munich, August 12, 2021-. E-cigarette vaping is becoming increasingly popular. According to the e-cigarette trade association, around 3.5 million people in Germany regularly use e-cigarettes. Many doctors and experts consider vaping so-called liquids to be a healthier alternative to conventional cigarettes. A decision by the German Bundestag is now causing a great deal of criticism in the industry: Liquids are to be taxed more heavily in the future. Daniel Kaske from Breathe Organics, manufacturer of premium CBD products, explains what liquids are and what the tax increase is all about.
Vaping – less pollutants and so far cheaper than smoking
How modern e-cigarettes work is explained quite simply: an electrified spiral inside the e-cigarette heats up and vaporizes the liquid that is filled in. This is the name of the liquid, which consists of a so-called carrier liquid, which is usually made up of glycerin and propylene glycol. There are also natural or artificial flavors. The spectrum ranges from typical tobacco aromas to menthol to exotic fruits and much more. Depending on the variety, it also contains water and in some cases nicotine. The resulting vapor is inhaled, this process is also called "vaping".
In contrast to conventional cigarettes, no tobacco is burned with the electronic variant. Harmful substances such as benzene, hydrocyanic acid, formaldehyde and nitrosamine, which are contained in normal cigarette smoke, are not released. In comparison, e-cigarettes are considered to be significantly less harmful to health. The German Cancer Research Center also comes to the same conclusion: According to studies, lung diseases such as COPD or chronic bronchitis occur far less frequently in vapers than in classic smokers. "Especially for heavy smokers, e-cigarettes offer a realistic chance for a healthier life without tobacco," explains Breathe Organics sales manager Daniel Kaske. In addition to the health aspect, the financial aspect has also clearly spoken in favor of vaping.
Massive price increase for liquids
Inexpensive vaping could soon be a thing of the past. At least when it comes to a current resolution of the Bundestag. According to this, liquids for e-cigarettes are to be subject to a tax of 1.60 euros per 10 milliliters from 2022. So far, only VAT has been charged for liquids. An increase in the tax to EUR 3.20 is even planned by 2026. This is a major setback for the burgeoning e-cigarette and e-liquid industry. While some e-liquids contain nicotine, there are far fewer contaminants in the vapour. Many insiders complain that this health benefit is not taken into account. "Such high taxation will deter many smokers from switching to e-cigarettes," warns Kaske. The situation in Great Britain is completely different: Here health politicians recommend switching to e-cigarettes, as this is expected to relieve the health system.
CBD Liquids
In addition to the ingredients mentioned, there is the possibility of vaping so-called CBD (cannabidiol) liquids. These were recently criticized after misleading media reports from the USA. This has also influenced the public perception of liquids in Germany. The problem: "In the reports, CBD liquids were equated with illegal liquids containing THC," explains Kaske. The latter are mentioned as a possible cause of almost 200 people suffering from a mysterious lung disease in the USA. "The THC liquids purchased on the black market were laced with a vitamin E acetate, which may have caused the problems," the Breathe Organics sales manager said.
Even though both CBD and THC are derived from the cannabis plant, there are fundamental differences: CBD is not intoxicating and is not classified as a narcotic. Incidents like those in the USA are therefore not to be feared with CBD liquids. On the contrary: CBD can have a calming, pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effect. All properties that allow CBD to be used in many areas and, especially in vapor form, to unfold its full and rapid effect. From Kaske's point of view, it is important to only use high-quality, certified products. Breathe Organics CBD liquids are manufactured under strict controls in Germany. The terpenes derived from plants and all other ingredients are of natural origin, free from chemicals, artificial flavor enhancers and sweeteners.
