Midwives often advise new mothers that babies require little skin care for the first few weeks. Skin experts, on the other hand, say that baby skin needs some moisturizing creams. But which cream is the right one? With the exception of two very well-known brands, Öko-Test rates almost all baby care creams as "very good".
It's a really divided topic: the baby care industry bets that parents believe their newborns need to be rubbed day and night. Midwives confirm that the skin of newborns requires the least care.
The situation is different with baby skin, which is exposed to many external influences due to wind and weather as well as solar radiation. Here we parents should provide the necessary protection. But how much is too much is something that every family has to weigh up individually and every baby has a different skin, which needs to be taken into account.
Most baby creams are good for baby skin
But the good news for all parents who like to put cream on their baby: Öko-Test can recommend 19 of 22 baby care creams tested in the 09/2020 test, which has now been updated again, without hesitation. They are free from problematic ingredients and are good for baby's skin. All natural cosmetic products tested were among the creams rated "very good". So you can't go wrong with these brands and you're on the safe side.
But the baby creams from Rossmann and other drugstores and discounters also scored "very good" and are recommended. So if you are most likely to look at the price, you can certainly buy the cheap care and do not harm your baby. When it comes to sustainability, natural cosmetics are always the better, but also more expensive choice.
These two baby creams stood out as problematic
Nivea and Penaten are both well-known brands that parents trust. Unfortunately, the Nivea BabySoft Care Cream and the Penaten Face & Body Care Cream failed in the Öko-Test comparison test. In the 09/2020 test, the laboratory found mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOAH) in both care creams, some of which can be carcinogenic. They would also contain paraffins that could be contaminated with MOAH.
In the test at that time, the Penaten care cream also contained another problematic substance: butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). However, the company Johnson & Johnson has now dispensed with this ingredient and the cream achieved a "sufficient" in the newer test special 04/2012. Another discounter cream, which contains synthetic polymers and is therefore harmful to the environment, also attracted negative attention in the test.
You can view and purchase the entire test results from issue 09/2020, as well as these and other details about the baby care cream, at Öko-Test.

Careful baby care!
When it comes to baby care, the motto really is: less is more. There is definitely an endless number of products on the market that suggest to us parents that we need them. However, not every child can tolerate so many skin care products.
But if your baby has really difficult skin, then you have to consult your dermatologist anyway. Therefore, it is best to be careful about using too many care creams and stick to your midwife or pediatrician.
