In the spring 2021 child seat test, ADAC tested 26 models in the categories of safety, operation, ergonomics and pollutant content. He examined another 26 models in autumn 2021. These are the best child seats!
For the ADAC child seat test 2021, the testers checked 26 other models for the criteria of safety, operation, ergonomics and pollutant content in autumn. Models for all sizes and ages were put to the test. It is gratifying that many even exceed the legal requirements. 14 child seats were rated "good" and seven "satisfactory" in the test. The test winner in autumn 2021 is the Mima iZi Go Modular X1 i-Size + iZi Modular i-Size Base (555 euros) for children up to around one year, which received an overall grade of 1.7. They are followed by the Graco Snugessentials + Snugride i-Size Base (140 euros) for children up to around one year and the Maxi-Cosi Pebble 360 (269 euros) + FamilyFix 360 Base (total 510 euros) for children up to around 1.5 years , each with a test grade of 1.8. Five seats were not recommended, including the Osann Oreo 360 II, which was rated "poor" due to excessive pollution. Prices are as of November 2021.

In the first part of the child seat test 2021, ADAC tested 26 seats in different sizes in the spring. The result was generally positive. 18 models were rated "good" and three "satisfactory". This means that 21 child seats in the 2021 ADAC test exceeded the legal requirements. With an overall rating of 1.7, five child seats performed best: in the child seats category for children up to around one year, the Besafe Babyzen Yoyo iZi Go Modular X1 i-Size + iZi Modular i-Size Base (490 euros), the Maxi- Cosi Tinca + Tinca Base (330 euros) and the Besafe Stokke iZi Modular X1 i-Size + iZi Modular i-Size Base (520 euros). There are two other test winners in the category of child seats for children up to 1.5 years: Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Lounge + i-Size Base (420 euros) and Silver Cross Simplicity Plus + Simplifix Isofix Base (440 euros). Prices are as of May 2021. More on the topic: Everything about child seats group 1/2/3

The examiners rated five seats in the ADAC child seat test 2021 with the grade "poor". The reason for the bad grade is the naphthalene contained in the cover fabric of the Besafe iZi Go Modular X1 i-Size (with and without iZi Modular i-Size Base) and the Swandoo Marie 2. This chemical compound is suspected of having carcinogenic effects. The poor rating of the Osann Oreo 360 is due to the plasticizer DPHP it contains, which can have a negative effect on the thyroid gland and hormone balance. The manufacturers Swandoo and Osann now offer an exchange of the polluted parts. A dangerous malfunction occurred in the Chicco Kiros i-Size + Kiros i-Size Base infant carrier during the frontal impact test. The shell detached from the Isofix base and flew forward almost unchecked. "The child is therefore exposed to a high risk of injury in the event of a serious accident," judged the ADAC in the 2021 child seat test and downgraded the baby seat accordingly. But Chicco has already reacted and is offering parents to exchange the Isofix station for an improved design.

In addition to the classic child seats, the ADAC also tested booster seats without back support. According to the ADAC verdict, however, they are only recommended "as a makeshift for slightly larger children" because they do not offer side impact protection. In addition, "belt and child are not optimally positioned," according to the ADAC. However, it is safer for the child to sit on a booster seat than not to secure it at all. When buying booster seats, ADAC experts recommend a plastic model. Polystyrene products are less stable and more likely to fail in an accident. The ADAC advises against simple booster seats without belt guides. Since 2017, simple booster seats have only been approved for children over 1.25 meters tall and weighing 22 kilograms due to safety deficits. Approvals for older seats remain valid.
ADAC test: Seats that grow with the child are problematic
According to the ADAC child seat test 2021, child seats that grow with the child are problematic with back support) should be replaced. The resulting compromises have an adverse effect on safety and handling, which resulted in the judgment "sufficient" for all four seats tested. Parents should therefore not only keep an eye on the cost savings, but also carefully weigh all the advantages and disadvantages, recommends the ADAC. If you only occasionally want to take different children of different ages with you (e.g. grandparents), a seat that grows with you can be a good alternative. According to the ADAC, there is a sufficient selection of safer products for children between the ages of around two and 12 years. The ADAC lists the following as disadvantages of growing seats:
ADAC gives tips on buying a child seat
If you want to buy a child seat, the ADAC advises parents to find out about the current offer beforehand. The current child seat test 2021 can help here, but results from previous years can also be compared very well. In addition, one should under no circumstances buy a model without having tried it out with the child first. It is therefore important to drive up to the specialist retailer with your child and car. The testers also point out that child seats with semi-universal approval (e.g. models with a support leg) cannot be installed in every car. However, the corresponding products come with a type list that can be used to check whether the product can be used in your own vehicle. After all, child seats must be installed as tightly and securely as possible. In addition, parents should make sure that belts do not crease and run as straight as possible. In the case of baby carriers, it should be checked above all whether the belt length is sufficient to be able to buckle the seat securely. With booster seats with back support, it can happen that the belt does not roll up automatically when the child bends forward, according to the experts of the ADAC child seat test.
