Efficient broadband networks for fast Internet are an "absolute prerequisite for economic growth", writes the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure. By 2018, the Federal Government intends to provide all German households with fast data flow - 50 megabits per second should be possible for every German citizen.

The "State of the Internet Report" by the technology company Akamai shows, however, that Germany is not exactly in the top league when it comes to Internet speed.
